Medhaj News: Even before 16th May results of general elections, which propelled Narendra Modi led BJP to power, were announced, Indian security forces started arresting social media activists for their anti-Modi posts on Twitter and Facebook. It was an unprecedented clampdown on freedom of speech, unseen even during the 1975 emergency. In a case of deliberate mischief, a Muslim boy from Pune was killed because of a Facebook post, which a Hindu boy had uploaded!

Following a hue and cry, even from a section of right wing media individuals, the State terror on social media was put on hold. Several pro-Modi handles spewing hate on Muslims and Congress supporters vanished overnight; since then regular twitter wars of a communal nature had more or less stopped making an appearance on social media. But a strain of anti-Muslim hate propaganda was active—and it seems to have resurfaced in the wake of Kashmir floods.

The Government of Narendra Modi, Hindutva organizations like RSS have so far shown no right wing propensities in their dealings with Kashmir floods. It is a national calamity and sane elements of all religions, parties, organizations have come forward to lend a helping hand.

But rabid, far-right sections are once again abusing Muslims on twitter. This practice must stop—it is not only divisive, but inhuman as well. It is also against the best traditions of Indian civil society, culture and Sanatani-Hindu traditions of compassion and tolerance. The far-right does not enjoy the support of Narendra Modi—this is at least what we would like to think…
