In today's hyper competitive and complex world, we are witnessing many inspiring stories.
A weaker person/entity is able to beat a stronger person/entity.
Is it really possible?
Indeed. How does it happen?
Let's discuss top three aspects when "David is winning the fight".
1. Understand Weakness
Whenever, we are in a ‘fight like situation,’ we can overpower our opponent if we know his weaknesses. Weaknesses can be a shortfall of offerings, competencies et al. E.g. If a political party has lost touch with masses then the parties in opposition can focus on this weakness, by first making a stronger people connect. Likewise, if a company has an excellent product but is pathetic in after sales service; it's competitor can offer superior services. And if our competitor in office, is an anti people and negative person then we should be "most pro people and amazingly positive person" in the world!
When David challenged Goliath for a fight, he quickly diagnosed his weaknesses. Goliath was too slow, his vision was weak, he didn't know how to defend. He was skilled in only close fight and was emotionally weaker et al.
Alexander, The Great, used to attack the weakest formation of his opponents army. When other soldiers of his opposition used to see the defeat, their morale used to go down further and then, he used to attack the next weak formation. Eventually, leading to a win by defeating one weak formation after another.
As I always say, just knowing is not enough. It's about taking purposeful, passionate and preserved actions, which will help us to turnaround the situations in our favor. David quickly acted on the weaknesses of Goliath and took fight to the end; ensured that Goliath is finished through sustained attacks, back to back. Goliath didn't even have time to blink!
2. Change the Rules
Goliath is trained to fight in certain ways and he is highly skilled in those ways. And if we also try to fight in a similar way, will we be able to win the fight? May be?
And if we have newer rules, we will give a surprise to him. "A surprise which will leave him stunned!" Our chances to win with an unprepared competitor will increase further.
A political party was using traditional methods of rallies and big posters for connecting with masses. Their opposition secretly initiated well thought out and sustained campaign through social media. The campaign was so good that it left the first political party dumb footed. By the time, they could react it was result time and they lost the election badly!
Two gentlemen were competing in a company. They were leading few initiatives. One of them changed the rules; he made his initiatives "Simple, People Centric and Result Oriented" while the other gentleman kept stuck to standard theoretical guidelines. End result, our best guess!
3. Build & Leverage Strength
We are blessed with countable (few) strengths. Our core issue is that we get stuck with our weaknesses. We need to identify and fully leverage our strengths. If we don't have strength we can always build it.
David was excellent in throwing stones at 150 miles per hour. And he leveraged that amazing ability to beat Goliath, who incidentally didn't even know how to throw stones!
Likewise, in our companies, identify strengths. Proactively build the strengths further, provide coaching and be ‘fight’ ready! We will end up "Creating many Davids for beating any Goliath".
A friend of mine was so proactive that she used to keep her team future and plan B ready. She used to think through and think ahead of times. For every strategic move, she had a plan B. Her this habit, in fact 1st habit of highly effective people, made her and her team extremely successful. Her initiatives could got seamlessly implemented and; she could rise many levels in her company.
Alexander came out with a unique formation for fighting battles with long spears. He trained his entire army and got it executed flawlessly, battle after battle, till he conquered many kingdoms.
Similarly, when we are about to launch a competitive product or service offering, it's prudent to set our team and keep them fight ready. Else, our relative "competitive advantage" may become a relative "competitive disadvantage".
And in the last but not the least, speed is the essence of a fight. "Faster and swifter you are, more lethal you become." Instill a sense of urgency in your team and keep high energy levels.
Let's remember that "Goliath was slow and David was fast!"
I wish us all the very best, in beating many Goliaths!

I liked tbe simplicity of putting forward a great message. Examples from industry and politics is excellent to keep interest going. Great read. I would add one more dimension. Drive out fear. I think it plays larger role in such fights.
