This is a tall David, the iconic Amitabh Bachchan in a time when a cool, detached look marked boiling anger against injustice, when an Indian condemned to live in poverty or tainted by birth as illegitimate revolted against the immediate patriarchy and the `rule of law’; and in the process, broke all codes to create a new cipher of lonely engagement, sacred revenge, occasional love—and compassion and violence as a way of life.

This therefore is not an article about Amitabh Bachchan; it is a subjective contemplation of a `lost’ era that haunts us, comments upon the present and urges, not to go back in time, but to make time—beauty, sensuality, chutzpah, belligerence, bravery, daring, male-bonding, respect for women—and image—a weapon that can change the future.

…it tells followers of Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Akshyay Kumar, Hrithik Roshan, Ranbir Kapoor and the like that courage does not come in candy-floss, biceps, arty airs, or fair and lovely good looks. It is handed out by a power to people like us who live by their own code, rebel whenever they want, refuse to toe the established line, die for a friend, and yet, are smart enough to emerge on top, combine glamour and grimness, splendor and squalidness, romance and aggression, the picturesque with the picaresque.

And yes, we nearly always get the girl in the end—if, of course, we have not decided otherwise; too much propensity for non-violence is not appreciated; pretentiousness and kitsch not appreciated!

Live and die with attitude, not aptitude…

फिल्म ज़ंजीर के इस विडियो में अमिताभ बच्चन के चेहरे पर pure contempt का expression है. एक ऐसा contempt जो पूरे attitude को दर्शाता है. यह केवल जांबाजी नहीं है. अमिताभ बच्चन कोई बॉडी बिल्डर नहीं हैं. आम आदमी जब अपने से ज्यादा ताकतवर, इस फिल्म में प्राण, से लड़ने जाता है, तो इसी attitude की वजह से लड़ पाता है. दुश्मन के लिए हिकारत, ताकत को दूना कर देता है. प्राण बहुत बड़ा गुंडा है. जानता है की अमिताभ बच्चन उसी के इलाके में उसी से लड़ने आया है. अमिताभ बच्चन पुलिस इंस्पेक्टर है. पर बिना वर्दी, बिना हथियार, प्राण के इलाके में आया है, क्यूंकि प्राण ने पहले तंज़ किया था की पुलिस स्टेशन के अन्दर और वर्दी पहन कर, सभी पुलिसवाले चिल्ला लेते हैं.

अमिताभ बच्चन से प्राण पूछता है: मतलब का बात करो साहब!

पर अमिताभ बच्चन जवाब नहीं देता! कुछ बोलता नहीं है! बल्कि बाएं हाथ से bhaad से सीधे मुंह पर वार करता है! यही है हिंदी-उर्दू प्रदेश का तेवर, बिना जवाब सीधे मार, जो हम लोगों ने ज़ंजीर से सीखा; और जिसने हम लोग जैसे underdogs को ज़िंदगी में बड़े से बड़े प्रतिद्वंदी से लड़ना सिखाया. ज़ंजीर के लेखकों सलीम-जावेद को पूरी तरह पता भी नहीं की उनके लेखन ने UP-Bihar के लड़कों में कैसे क्रांतिकारी तेवर पैदा किये, जो हर क्षेत्र में लाखों के काम आये.





दीवार फिल्म के इस विडियो में अमिताभ बच्चन, जो एक मामूली कुली है, हफ्ता लेने वाले गुंडों से अकेले लड़ता है. 1975 में हवा में उडके मारने का रिवाज़ नहीं था. इसमें अमिताभ बच्चन के सामने कई विरोधी हैं; पर फिर वही दुश्मन के प्रति ठंडी आँखों से cold contempt, इस बार बीड़ी चबाते हुए! लडाई के scene में अमिताभ बच्चन एक जगह पागलों की तरह लड़ता है; बहुत लोग सोचते हैं, इसमें फिल्म के एडिटर ने fast forward किया है; पर ऐसा नहीं है. शूटिंग के वक़्त, अमिताभ बच्चन में खुद पागलों सी शक्ति आ गयी थी; और वो पागलों की तरह लड़ें, हमें convince कर दिया की यह लडाई वास्तव में हुई!
