New drive has been initiated by Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam to ensure proper billing. Under this, power utility will replace 4000 defective meters in the city so that billing could be ensured. This drive is expected to be completed by the end of February’19. The cost of meters depends upon connected load. On an average, a meter cost Rs. 600. Replacement of defective meters will cost around Rs. 24 Lakh and it will borne by Discom itself.
Discom officials said when a meter becomes defective, bill charged by Discom from the consumer is based upon the amount on the average of their energy consumption last year. Discom has detected 4000 meters on which billing is done on above basis. Whenever meter stops working, bills are generated based on last year’s consumption. This is counter-productive in the long term as electricity consumption is variable and keeps going up and down. Discom incurs losses when billing happens on the basis of average consumption. This makes replacement of meters a continuous process, said by Superintending Engineer KC Aggarwal, New Gurgaon.
